Artist Profiles: Janey Payne Short

Born and raised in California, Janey’s always had a warm spot in her heart for animals. As far as her artistic talents, she was constantly working on “projects”, redecorating or making cute little items out of whatever she could find! Graduating from California State College, with a BA degree in art, Janey began a ten year teaching career.

Her move to Michigan allowed her love for animals to grow. She had a small “pet farm” in her backyard with rabbitts, chickens, tortoises, as well as dogs, cats, and birds. Janey and her husband/partner, Lee, have purchased 40 acres in Frankfort, Michigan for retirement. The potential for inspiration from wildlife and the reinstatement of a larger “pet farm” is an exciting future goal!

Janey’s artistic endeavors created “Forever Young” in 1989, with a strong desire to produce something unique. Inspired by her love of animals and many pets who have “owned her” throughout her life, Janey has created many original designs. Each piece is handformed, handpainted, and kiln-fired. She currently exhibits her work yearly in over 30 shows in the Eastern and Midwest areas of the US.
