Artist Profiles: Carole Berhorst

My love for functional decorative pottery began when I was a youngster. My idea of a warm inviting home was pottery displayed throughout the house. Although, the idea of becoming a potter never occurred to me until I became an adult and started taking pottery classes as a hobby.

I took my first pottery class at he Birmingham Bloomfield Art Association in 1978 while working on my Masters in Psychology degree at Wayne State University. My involvement with clay became a passion, and I’ve been working full time with it since.

My first art fair was in Franklin, Michigan in 1980. That show provided me the opportunity to become known as a potter. My work was mentioned in the newspapers and consequently I was invited to exhibit my pottery in numerous art fairs. Since that first show, I became more and more involved in Art Fairs, Temple and Church shows, Exhibits, and Private shows.

Presently, I most often exhibit my work in major Art Fairs in Michigan. I sell and do consignment work to a number of retailers, galleries, boutiques and work with interior designers.

The more I involve myself in pottery, the more I grow to love what I do and plan to continue for as long as I physically can.

I work with soft and contrasting colors, solid color with carving and raised designs. All my pieces are functional.
