Even though glass beadmaking is one of the fastest-growing arts, many beadmakers don’t have access to instructors or classes. Instead they rely on books and videos. Basic Glass Beadmaking with Tricia Campion instructs those students beginning with the basics - Hot Head torch and vermiculite.

Tricia begins with preparing the mandrels, making the bead and components, decorating the beads, removing the beads from the mandrels, then ends with how to finish the beads.

One of the highlights of the video is the addition of an insert video image - allowing the viewer to see a side view and close-up of the beadmaking action, as well as the frontal view. The video is in “real” time so the beadmaker sees the entire process, with the actual amount of time for each process.

Proper heating, application of the glass to the mandrel, and use of the marver pads and paddles are covered as she demonstrates the basic shapes - the round bead, the cylinder, and several versions of the “eye” bead. She takes the beginner through the process of creating decorating components, such as stringers, twists, and latticinos. Then she demonstrates how to use the components to add decorative elements to the beads. She also demonstrates how to decorate beads by inserting manufactured murrini or millefiori.

From beadmaking, to annealing in vermiculite, and finally to finishing the beads - Tricia unveils the mysteries of beadmaking for the beginner beadmaker. After watching this video, and seeing some of the beads covered in the future, the student is sure to be tempted to buy the remaining four videos in the series.
